"Quote from Dewsbury Health Centre"

There is a very significant body of evidence that suggests that buildings affect how we behave, how receptive we are, how well we learn, how we work and socialise with other people and very importantly how we feel emotionally, physically and mentally. High quality, thoughtful health and care environments have been shown to speed recovery times, reduce levels of drug intake, reduce blood pressure and reduce levels of pain.

With new knowledge come greater responsibility and our expectations of what health and care buildings (and public buildings in general) should and can be have increased dramatically over the last few years. Those responsible for commissioning new buildings increasingly recognize that the quality of the buildings themselves demonstrate the value placed on the community it serves.

A multidisciplined approach is needed to meet these expectations and artists bring valuable expertise and exciting and effective propositions to the planning and creation of distinctive, high quality public buildings.

In public buildings the arts are capable of creating uplift and beauty, of animating places and making them more relevant, of providing creative and useful solutions to design challenges and of cultivating relationships between people and place.

Open Art work with a range of organisations to help create inspirational, health promoting buildings. We advocate an integrated approach for the arts, that starts early in the commissioning process to ensure greater opportunities, greater impact, greater relevance and greater value for money.
